Serving Chronic Need: Appalachia

Appalachia: where disaster makes chronic, generational need even worse.

Hope Force exists to alleviate suffering and bring hope to those impacted by crises and disasters. The systemic and generational poverty in McDowell County, WV has created a complex disaster that rarely gets attention.

Many residents of McDowell County face severe food insecurity, poor infrastructure, and high unemployment due to the lack of jobs. As one of the poorest areas in the US, it is estimated that 75% of households lack a gainfully employed individual, and 45% of children do not live with a biological parent.

McDowell County is also filled with beauty, not only in the landscape but also the people who call it home. The mountain hollows of this community are filled with people doing the best they can to make ends meet.

Watch Our Impact in Appalachia

Helping Appalachians know they are not alone.

Hope Force desires to build strong, lasting relationships with the people in McDowell by roofing and painting, debris removal and landscaping, front porch sitting and trail riding on a 4-wheeler.

We believe that God is already at work in the hollows of southern West Virginia and we invite you to join us and fall in love with the people and and beauty of McDowell County.

The Hope Force house can comfortably accommodate a team of 18. We typically have teams in the spring and the fall. If you would like to send a team to partner with us please let us know. Email our Director of Hope Force Appalachia, Brian Wagner.
