Why an Emergency Go-Bag Is Essential For Special Needs Families And Needs To Be Personalized

Most emergency kits cover the basics: food, water, flashlights, and a first aid kit. But for families with medically complex or developmentally diverse children, the “basics” often aren’t enough.

Your child may rely on:

  • Medical devices and backup batteries
  • Visual or sensory support tools
  • Communication aids
  • Specialized food or feeding systems
  • Calming routines that help reduce fear

This isn’t just about survival. It’s about meeting your child’s needs in a stressful moment — so they feel safe, understood, and cared for.

Below is a checklist of essentials, grouped by category. You can keep your go-bag near an exit or in your vehicle, and make sure every family member knows where it is.

Tips for Maintaining Your Go-Bag

Maintaining your go-bag is just as important as packing it. Medications and food items can expire quickly, so be sure to rotate them out every 3–6 months to keep everything fresh and safe. If your child is growing (and let’s be honest — they always are), check clothing and shoe sizes regularly to make sure what’s packed still fits and is seasonally appropriate.

It’s also a good idea to practice using items from the bag in low-stress settings, like turning on the flashlight, opening snacks, or trying on sensory gear. And don’t forget to keep your child involved — letting them choose comfort items, decorate their bag, or help with packing not only builds their sense of ownership, but can also ease anxiety by making preparedness feel familiar and even fun.
