Who is my Neighbor?
December 20, 2010
Hope Force International is built on the premise that we, as followers of Christ, have a responsibility to respond to the suffering of our neighbor, whether that be next door or across the ocean. This year we literally had the opportunity to fulfill this mandate in our own home town. Record-breaking rains in May brought devastating floods to Nashville and its environs, wreaking havoc on homes, businesses and livelihoods. As never before, the reality of natural disasters and its impact on individuals was truly brought home for us.
Our nearby neighbors in Haiti have undergone indescribable hardship and suffering this year. Following January's disastrous earthquake, 250,000 people were killed and many more are still unaccounted for. Others are still in desperate need of shelter and security. Hurricane Tomas followed and the ensuing floods and water runoff helped spread an infantile cholera outbreak that has now become a full-blown epidemic. The latest rash of political violence following Haiti's general election is serving as a catalyst for increased suffering as a massive effort on behalf of the world's medical community has been severely hampered and supplies, personnel and medications sit idle while safety on the streets of Port-au-Prince remains unpredictable.
Our commitment to the impoverished Appalachian region of the United States grew even deeper this year as we sent teams to War, West Virginia to reach out to our neighbors suffering from chronic poverty and the results of decades-old joblessness and loss of hope. This commitment has become one of the cornerstones of our activities and we look ahead to the New Year with renewed dedication to reach those who are suffering here in the United States.
In Luke 10, Jesus distills the scriptures down into one clear message: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind. And love your neighbor as you love yourself." As a result of your support, and countless other companies, churches and individuals, Hope Force is carrying out the mandate of the Good Samaritan and becoming the hearts and hands of Jesus to those within our scope of influence.
As we celebrate the coming of Jesus during this Christmas season, we celebrate your commitment to our work of mercy amongst the poor and suffering. With God's continued grace and provision, we look ahead to many more opportunities in the year ahead. Thank you for standing with us in our calling and commitment.
With hope and appreciation,
Jack and Cherie Minton
