What does the "Ministry of Presence" look like?
June 10, 2014
April 28th marked the beginning of a multi-day weather event with tornadoes across many Southern states. Two struck the city of Louisville, Mississippi with a fury.
78-year old ?Mr. H? lives down a small street, just behind a factory where he worked for years. While hunkered down in in his kitchen with his granddaughters, he heard piercing winds, breaking glass and crashing debris. When he dared to venture outside, his entire street looked like an apocalyptic warzone. Just two doors down, only foundations remained of his neighbors? homes. ?Mr. H? lost windows and roofing and discovered splinters of wood impaled in the side of his uninsured house where he has lived since 1972.
Our Hope Force Disaster Response team found ?Mr. H? sitting in his carport amidst rain soaked furniture, boxes and broken lamps--with many of his belongings waiting for garbage pickup. The next day, team members hopped onto his roof to make repairs, while Hope Force chaplains spent the morning helping him process as he recounted his terrifying ordeal in great detail. He stated, ?I hope I NEVER go through anything like that again!? Believing that God spared his life, it was discovered in conversation that he could not read. One of the team members decided to buy him an audio Bible with a CD player so that he could enjoy daily scripture readings.
We often remind each other that God?s love and affection is for ?the one? ? even in the midst of overwhelming needs all around. What a privilege for our team to be with ?Mr. H? in the aftermath of this devastation -- to listen, share together, swing hammers and leave a deposit of hope.
Please pray for Mr. ?H? and for those who have encountered tremendous loss in the aftermath of this tornado outbreak.
