Pastors Conference in Haiti
August 2, 2011
Jack and Cherie Minton founded Hope Force International (HFI) in 2003 based on their 23 years of experience with international relief and development. Between them, the Minton's commitment to international aid has taken them to over 50 nations. The vision of HFI -- to be a compassionate response to crisis and disaster -- provided the platform for an immediate response to the devastating earthquake in Haiti of January 2010. Jack recently returned from a Pastor's Conference where he and HFI board member, Dan Sneed were keynote speakers.
Port Salut is located five hours southwest of Port-au-Prince and is nothing like the bustling capital city that was devastated in last year's earthquake. This sleepy waterfront community has very little in the way of conveniences but makes up for it in natural beauty. It is the home town of the founding pastor of a dynamic church movement in Haiti. Reverend and Mrs. Meletus carried a burden many years ago that God has given them for their community and surrounding villages that were steeped deeply in Voodoo. As they preached The Word over the years, the advance of the Gospel was not without its challenges; including the threat of violence. Eventually the light of the Good News overpowered that of darkness. Years later there is a thriving group of 24 churches as well as a growing number of eager and spiritually hungry leaders.
The turnout to the Pastors Conference exceeded the expectations of those making preparations; approximately 135 men and women of all ages. Over the three days Dan Sneed and I had the honor of teaching on various subjects. We learned immediately that they absolutely loved to have set times for questions and answers. This was an excellent opportunity to assess their spiritual development and hunger for knowledge of God's word. Many of the leaders have very little, if any, formal training and long for the opportunity to learn more about the word of God.
Dan's teaching on "The Power of a New Identity" had a profound impact and was life changing for many. Plus, his sensitivity provided multiple opportunities to gently speak a word of truth and insight that deeply moved the group. I had the opportunity to speak on the significance of healthy relationships and the ministry of reconciliation available to all believers. I also spoke on the precious treasures of God deposited, often in the secret places, for our benefit in times of difficulty. He places them there for life and hope, if we will trust in and rely upon Him. Even though there were barriers to overcome such as language, culture, life experiences, etc. it was obvious that God's word overcame and penetrated hearts and minds with truth. The feedback we received was very moving; we?re already being asked to come back year after year.
We wish that each one of our HFI supporters could have been with us to experience the thrill of investing into the lives of those that are living, loving and serving the Haitian people like these leaders do. Please pray for them as they strive to be a catalyst of love and hope to those they serve in Jesus' name.
